20 - i was really feeling down today and i can't think of anything to be thankful about. i'm so stressed! but then all it took was someone holding my hand and looking me in the eye and assuring me everything will be okay. i remembered that on days like this (as well as on days not like this), i should be thankful to have someone like kim.

missing my nephew (part two)

because you asked for it, here is a compilation of shout-outs from my facebook featuring my nephew:

at seven:

out of the blue, my nephew told me: "ninang is the beautifulest girl in the earth."

* * *
as i was approaching our gate: "neeeeenaaaanggg!!!" (wow, para akong nag-abroad! haha.)

* * *
waking me up around 5:30am: "ninang, gising na, tumitilaok na yung mga manok o!" (grandmother, wake up, the rooster is crowing already!")

* * *
his first sms to me: "rada-rada."

* * *
before opening gifts, my nephew looks for the card first and reads it aloud.

* * *
earlier, me: "baby, sali ka sa mga nagba-basketball! naka-rubber shoes ka naman!" ("baby, join those who are playing basktetball! you are wearing rubber shoes after all!") rajah: "naka-slippers lang kaya ako!" ("i am wearing slippers only!") me: "hindi ikaw, yang naglalakad sa harap mo." ("i was not referring to you, but to that person walking in front of you.") rajah: "ah, kala ko ako e sabi mo kasi baby. malaki na kaya yan (referring to kim)!" ("i thought you were referring to me because you said baby. he is big already!")

later,
nephew is crying because he doesn't want me to address kim as baby.

before sleeping,
rajah: "i'm sorry, ninang. ginulo ko yung room mo. ("i made a mess in your room.") ako lang ang baby ha? ("i am the only baby, okay?") goodnight. see you next week."

the following week,
me: "pede na bang maging ambebi ulit si ninang at tawagin nyang baby si tito kim?" ("can i be ambebi again and can i call uncle kim baby?") rajah: (shy smile) pwede na! ("you can!")

* * *
nephew says he will play the violin on my wedding day. sweet kid.

* * *
before falling asleep... "ninang, ilagay mo sa facebook, today we study math, buy cake for lolo, eat mcdo and buy chips. tapos sa huli, love, rajah." (these were all the things we did together.)

* * *
while passing through the living room. my nephew looked at me, smiled and then pointed at the tv: "si ninang, o!" ("look, there's godmother!") he was watching milan on cinema one.

* * *
me: "bahang-baha na daw sa manila..." ("they say manila is flooded already...") kim: "sana umalis na yung bagyo..." ("let's hope the typhoon will leave already...") rajah: "alam mo kasi, tito kim, ang philippines e malapit sa equator kaya tayo binabagyo palagi." ("you know, uncle kim, the philippines is near the equator that's why typhoons frequent us.")

* * *
my nephew was staring at my bedroom wall, and then looked at me, smiled and said: "ninang, kamukha mo yung babae (pointing at the smallville poster)." ("godmother, you look like that girl.")

* * *
after i calculated his body mass index: "ninang, ano? kailangan ko pa bang mag-diet?" ("godmother, so, do i still need to diet?" me: "normal ka pa naman. pero mag-diet ka pa din ng konti." (you're on the normal range. but you still have to diet a little.") he then went to my mom: "lola, sabi duon sa ni-research ni ninang, konting diet na lang daw ako." ("grandmother, according to godmother's research, i only need to diet a little.") after two minutes, he went to my dad: "lolo, mayroon pa bang pancit?" ("grandfather, do we still have noodles?")

* * *
while having a chickenjoy dinner, mom: "birthday pala ni almi ngayon." ("it seems like it's almi's birthday today.") rajah: "huh? ako kaya ang magbi-birthday sa december 16!" ("huh? it's me who's celebrating a birthday on december 16!) mom: "pinalitan na kaya niya ang birthday nya." *"she just changed her birthday.") rajah: "ano?! november na?!" ("what?! to november?!")

at eight:

my nephew woke me up around 7 a.m.: "ninang, gising na. tignan mo yan, may sun na o." (godmother, wake up already. look at that, there's the sun already." me: "puyat si ninang, later na ha?" ("godmother was up all night. i'll wake up later, okay?) he left my room but came back a few minutes after: "ninang, dali! gising ka na! pingu na!" ("godmother, hurry! wake up already! pingu is on already!")

* * *
role reversal: "lolo, maligo ka na saka magbihis ka na. aalis na tayo." ("grandfather, take a bath and dress up already. we will be leaving right now."

* * *
while i was sick: "ninang, anong sakit mo? wag mo akong lalalinan." ("godmother, what sickness do you have? don't pass it on to me.")

* * *
right after exiting the gate of splash island... "ninang, this is the best summer ever!"

* * *
my nephew sneaked into my room to return my bear warren. i had to loan him boink (also a bear) so he'll let me bring warren with me to makati. he then introduced boink to his stuffed dogs - james, hogan and lloydie. (cute!)

* * *
my nephew called me at 5:50 a.m.: "ninang? bagong gising ka?" ("godmother, did you just wake up?" me: "natutulog pa nga si ninang e." ("actually, godmother is still sleeping.") rajah: "nakabili ka na ba ng foldabots book 3?" ("have you bought the foldabots book 3?) me: "tatawagan na lang kita pag nakabili na ako ha?" ("i will call you when i got one, okay?")

at nine:

while i was trying to play the violin (twinkle, twinkle, little star or the alphabet song), my nephew was commenting on my performance by saying good, better, best or bad, worse, worst for every stroke i make. (teacher? haha!)

* * *
before going to sleep, my nephew placed all the gifts he received from us tonight on his study table and wrote this note beside it: "please read my letter. thank you for all your gifts this christmas." a separate note taped on a bag of candies says: "thank you, jesus for the gifts i received from my family."

* * *
my nephew just walked out of his room carrying his stuffed toys--three dogs, two bears and a monkey--while singing "you've got a friend in me" from toy story 3.

* * *
story time before sleeping... "ninang, ano bang ginagawa mo sa maynila?" ("godmother, what are you doing in manila?") me: "aba, edi nagwo-work..." ("working, of course...") rajah: "naliligo... kumakain... naglalaba... ganyun?" ("taking a bath... eating... doing the laudry... like that?") me: "opo..." ("yes...") he laughed and said, "boring naman! kawawa ka naman!" ("that's boring! poor you!")

* * *
story time before sleeping... "hindi ko nakukumusta si aya (his cousin)... busy kasi e!" ("i haven't checked on aya... because i'm busy!") me: "ambata-bata mo pa a! busy ka na agad?!" ("you're so young! you're busy already?!") rajah: "busy sa work! answer nang answer nang answer! hanggang matapos ang book!" ("busy at work! i answer and answer and answer! until i finish the book!")

* * *
one of the two colored chicks my nephew bought from san jose fiesta just won't stop chirping so he said to the chick, "pilyaaa!!!" ("disobedient!!!")

missing my nephew (part one)

today is his moving-up day from grade four. not being able to be with him on his special days, i can't help but miss him. on times like this i turn to his old videos on multiply. seeing how tiny and bulol he used to be (my nephew singing three years ago), i can't believe he's nine already and will be admitted to grade five next school year.

it was like only yesterday, kim and i would usually "borrow" my nephew and take him with us on our road trips to cuenca, batangas (he loved seeing the mountains and trees) and robinson's place (he loved clinging on to kim's arms, saying he's a monkey) in lipa city (my nephew at the mall four years ago).
"tito kim, monkey mo 'ko!"

my nephew used to be this toy who volunteers to dance or show off his drumming skills just to entertain me on a rather boring day inside the house. and then one day, i just woke up to see he was already allowed to play outside on his own, even riding his bike! after accepting i can't stop him from growing up, it was i who taught him to ride his bike without training wheels. the growing up sped up after that. he started reading k-zone and got his own mobile phone and learned to send sms that i have to reply to asap otherwise i'll get a follow-up "ninang, why are you not texting me back?"

but some things don't change. when i'm at home, he is still my alarm clock who asks "puyat ka ba?" ("have you been up all night?") and he still sings to me on my birthday.

while on multiply, i also stumbled upon a collection of my nephew's wittiest and funniest quotes that i posted years ago. let me share some here:

at two:

he would say: "buhay mo!" when he doesn't want to mind you or "pala kang hamburger!" ("you look like a hamburger!") when he's mad at you.

* * *
he wakes me up with this monologue: "ninang, wake up na. day na o, look, may sun na o! anong gusto mong almusal? sopas? o pancit? pancit? o sige, ipagluluto kita." ("godmother, wake up already. it's day already. look, there's the sun! what do you want for breakfast? soup? or noodles? noodles? okay, i'll cook some for you.")

* * *
he asks everyone: "gusto mo ng kapatid?" ("would you like to have a sibling?")

* * *
while aboard a grocery cart: "ninang, wrong way, wrong way! go that way (pointing to the toys section)!"

at three:

it was one of his first few days at nursery school and an uncle of mine who lives just across the daycare center visited the school one day just to check how my nephew was doing. my nephew saw him peeked through the window. he excitedly grabbed a chair near the window and stood there jumping: "wowo wex (lolo lex), andaming bata dito!" ("there are so many kids here!")

* * *
his favorite movie: "yung bisontel. yung may dragon." (bisontel = enteng kabisote pala!)

* * *
i saw him reaching for a toy truck from one of our cabinet drawers. i didn't bother to get it for him because he wasn't asking for my help, meaning he is confident he can do it on his own. i have seen him pull out his tiny chair at times to reach for his toys and i just keep an eye on him in case he falls off. but that particular time, i noticed he stopped jumping after a few minutes but kept looking up his toy truck and whispering, "come here, come here."

at four:

while singing narda: "mapapansin kaya sa dami ng 'yong ginagawa kung kaagaw ko ang lahat may pag-asa bang makilala ka...", he suddenly paused and asked me, "ninang, ano yung pag-asa?" ("godmother, what does pag-asa mean?")

confused on how to explain it to him i just said, "in english, hope." and then he said, ahhh... and continued singing. i wonder if he really understood me.

* * *
while on the phone, he asked me: "ninang, sinong kusap mo? si tito kim? sabi mo galit ako sa kanya. kasi antagal-tagal niyang dumating dito." ("godmother, who are you talking to? is that uncle kim? tell him i'm mad at him. because he's taking too long to get here.") he meant he misses kim, ahwww...

at five:

when he's not in the mood: "tumitingin pa kayo lahat sa akin e. pala akong telebisyon." ("you are all looking at me. like i'm a television.")

* * *
subtlety: "galit ako sa dalawang taong iyon (pointing to his mom and dad)." ("i'm mad at those two people over there.")

* * *
his definition of a good smell: "ambango mo naman, ninang... pala kang fried chicken!" ("you smell good, godmother... you're like fried chicken!")

* * *
my mom was asking my nephew to stop playing and study for school instead. he replied, "sandali lang, tapusin ko lang 'to (playing)." ("just a moment, i'll just finish this.") and then my mom said, "sandali, sandali ka pa dyan," ("you even had to say just a moment") while passing by him. my nephew stared at my mom as she passed by, looked at me and whispered, "ang kulit." ("so insistent.")

* * *
my mom: "mag-aral ka na. ang dami-dami ko pang gagawin. may pupuntahan pa ako. hindi ko na alam kung anong uunahin ko e." ("study now. i still have many things to do. i also need to go somewhere. i can't decide which one to do first.')

he said, "alam mo kung anong dapat mong unahin? (insert significant pause here) ang unahin mo. ay ang pag-alis." ("you know what you should do first? first. you leave.")

* * *
during one of our most heated arguments: "ninang, bakit mo ako pinapagalitan? ako ba si tito kim?" ("godmother, why are you nagging me? am i uncle kim?)

* * *
when he was to leave for vacation: "lolo, aalis ako ha? wag kang magbabarik. wag kang kakain ng kung anu-ano, wag masyadong madami. ang sugar. ang cholesterol. gusto mo bang sumakit na naman ang tyan mo? gusto mo bang magkasakit? gusto mong mamatay?" ("grandfather, i am leaving, okay? don't get drunk. don't eat too much of everything. the sugar. the cholesterol. do you want to get a tummyache again? do you want to get sick? do you want to die?")

* * *
when his cousin refused all the toys he offered him: "alam mo ba yung word na disappointed? i am disappointed."

* * *
when i failed to go home one weekend: "ninang, galit na ako sa'yo kasi antagal mo umuwi. hindi mo kasi tinapos agad yung work mo!" ("godmother, i am mad at you because you're taking too long to get home. because you didn't finish your work on time!")

* * *
afternoon nap time: "ninang, kasya pa ba sa'kin itong kumot ko pag 29 years old na ako?" ("godmother, will my blanket still fit me when i'm 29 years old already?")

* * *
when i asked him why he doesn't like to audition for the star kid quest: "wala naman akong talent." ("i don't have a talent.")

at six:

while my mom was putting him to sleep: "lola, bakit lab mo ako pag nakahiga?" ("grandmother, why do you love me when i'm lying in bed?')

* * *
he caught me watching gossip girl: "ninang, bakit lage nya sabe xoxo?" ("godmother, why does she always says xoxo?")

* * *
while watching t.v., axe's new ad was aired (that one where the girls were chasing this guy who used axe), terrified: "ninang! anong gagawin nila?!" ("godmother! what are they going to do?!) and i said, "aamuyin lang nila yung lalake!" (they will just smell the guy.")

* * *
i have more anecdotes on my facebook. maybe i should compile them, too. but for now, let's stop at when he was six. i wish he could have been six forever.

anyway, ending this post with my favorite kulit clip of my nephew filmed in april 2007, catch him saying "i am going to maynila and i am sad to cry..." enjoy!

fridate and saturdate

march 25. after lunch, i asked kim to accompany me on my bank duties. we didn't have any plans other than that so after, we just went mall-hopping as usual to avoid the summer heat. oh yes, summer might have just arrived for real.

first, we had merienda at food choices in glorietta 4. we were so happy to have secured a booth, hehe. i had go greek's chicken gyro, while kim had a bacon hotdog sandwich from smokey's.

we then made a mistake of dropping by zara because i ended up walking out with a bag of goodies again. i also got sales talked into applying for a citi gold card, haha. anyway, i don't think i'll get approved and i got a canvass shopping bag just for signing up. i just tell myself at least i helped the sales lady with her quota.

so, here are my latest buys: a cute shorts (from the kid's section, haha), a floral you & me top and a top kim picked for me.

i was thinking if this can count as my second shopping spree for the year because i didn't spend as much as i did on the first one. kim suggested that i revise my mission of having only two shopping sprees a year into spending x amount of money for shopping because the goal behind the mission after all is to cut off my shopping expenses. good point. i declared a p10,000 shopping fund right there and then. after a thorough computation, i found out i have spent p8,955 in the past three months alone (all spent on zara merchandise. surprise, surprise.). that means the amount left on my shopping fund now amounts to p1,045 only. so now i know. i definitely have to stop shopping until christmas. i will be saving my remaining balance for a pair of shoes, haha.

by the way, here's how not to wear your jumpers, haha:
instant belt and suspender :))

we capped off our fridate with a bonchon dinner. we shared ginger tofu salad with chicken add-on and spicy chicken chops with rice. we loved the salad. you should try it!

march 26. over lunch with my research siblings after attending the pdieuc general assembly, schatzi gave me two passes for cinemas in market!market! and then i found out i got four more passes (valid in eastwood cinemas) for attending daydesk meetings, yay! (i gave schatzi two of the eastwood tickets in exchange for the market!market! passes she gave me.)

the catch: the passes are valid until march 30 (eastwood) and 31 (market!market!) only. so after lunch, i tagged kim along to market!market! for an impromptu movie date at market!market! before his work. we didn't know what movies were on so we just decided when we got there. films showing were sucker punch (the poster was visually appealing), limitless (which i later found out was getting good reviews), that sarah-gerald movie and rango (which we've seen already).

we ended up watching sucker punch. kim and i agreed that it has potential. it was visually delicious, even reminding us of final fantasy, but it failed to build its characters and solidify it's plot (if at all there was a plot to speak of). /reviewattempt

of course, our movie date would not be complete without an nyfd fix:
waiting for our fries & dip

after the movie, kim dropped me off at greenbelt, where i was meeting up with my sister to work on her thesis, and then headed to work. when my sister arrived we went straight to business and i dealt with 120 short stories written mostly by 10-year-olds. i had to evaluate their originality, creativity and their command of the english language (grammar, punctuation, spelling).
death by papersss!!!

my day officially ended at midnight when i got home and transformed back into, thankfully, not a cinderella but a sleeping beauty, chos! but i swear if i had a grandfather's clock it would have made that scary sound the moment i opened my unit's door. good thing i don't have one.

p.s. i've been using this montager app to make photo collages on my iphone for a week now and i love it. it's fun, easy-to-use and free (the pro version goes for us$1.99)! you're welcome.

a watch and five cows

march 21. i was scheduled to attend the company's brand dna seminar-workshop at marriott hotel so i was up by 5:45 a.m. and was at the office by 7 to catch the shuttle to the venue. the program started shortly after 8 and ended around 6:30 in the evening. overall, i'd say the experience was not bad as i expected (i hate seminars. i used to love attending leadership trainings in grade school and high school. what happened?) and ang sarap ng food!!!

breakfast, lunch, desserts and merienda:

the best part of this seminar is the souvenir inquirer swatch watch!

it's quite big for a tiny person like me but i love it!

after the seminar, i headed to five cows in trinoma for sha's birthday treat!

117th-monthsary week

march 14. we were not able to celebrate due to our conflicting schedules and health issues but we still took a 7:38 p.m. photo. we agreed to just do something together on the days that followed whenever we can. i fell asleep after a few episodes of greek and fringe.
smile pa rin :)

march 15. we had a quick dinner at piadina italiana in greenbelt 1 before kim went to work. we just passed by the resto and it was not crowded so we thought of giving it a try. the food was reasonably priced and i loved the grissini di pizza or garlic bread sticks with "special" cheese dip.

after dinner, kim walked me to the jeepney terminal and having a few more minutes to spare, we thought of going to the nearby ayala triangle garden. we just walked around and talked while joggers passed us by. when we got tired, we sat down near the ayala exchange tower and ended up talking about soulmates, heh. by 7:30 p.m., i was on my way home while kim headed to work.
hanging lights on one of the trees at the ayala triangle garden

march 17. kim was on day-off so after my shift we watched rango at glorietta 4. we both had dinner when we met so we didn't have to eat out (read: broke, haha). we just had nyfd fries and dip with us during the movie.
sorry, kinulang ako sa effort :))

march 18. kim thought we drop by lipa town proper on our way to our respective provincial homes. and we literally walked down the memory lane, passing by places we used to frequent when we were in high school (o naalala mo nung iniwan mo ako dito...) and early part of college (o di ba dito tayo nagkikita?). we then saw this new (to us, at least) graciano's pizza & pasta restaurant near lipa cathedral and we just had to give it a try. the chicken and spaghetti were done shakey's style but the pizza was too sweet for our taste.

wednesdate with the girls

march 16. i so miss my gs gehls. i've seen them just last night but i can't wait to see them again on monday already. this must be love!

requisite attendance shots (mandated by no less than myself, haha)
absentees: karen, sha, mix and andy

we had dinner at cibo in greenbelt 5. we shared two orders of pasta, one oval pizza, potato chips, spinaci gola, three desserts and one fruit shake each. superbusog!!!kudos to gerlie for the 50-percent deal she got from here.

mes cheries <3

on moments when our mouths were not full (we had gmrc in grade school, y'all!), we talked about gerlie's love life (of course!), the best online deals, facials, bras on sale, showbiz chismis, part-time jobs, annoying persons and recent happenings in each other's lives. how i wish we could do this every day over lunch like our good old gs days...

anyway, have to go for now... leaving you with this:
girls on the *restroom* mirror :))

my first bookswap

march 12. after bonchon dinner with kim, i headed to starbucks 6750 in ayala for a bookswap with kate, drea, eliza and kat. it was my first time to join them and i brought only one book (here on earth by alice hoffman) just because i was sure someone (drea) is interested in that book. one of my fears was that nobody would like to borrow my books, ha-ha-ha!

drea, moi and kat were the first ones to arrive. hats off to drea for securing seats for everyone as early as 6 p.m. hardcore (or to match the night's theme, should i say hardbound? heh.) lang e!

while waiting for the rest of the group, the three of us mostly just admired each other's painted nails, hihi. drea's was bluish green, mine was purple punch (by caronia) while kat's was purple, which later had bluish green dots painted by drea.

kate and eliza (with her boyfriend jaykie) arrived shortly after 9 p.m.
kate, drea, kate, eliza, jaykie, almi
from drea's cam :)

and the book-swapping began almost instantly. drea lent me four books. wish me the best of luck in finishing them within the year, ha-ha-ha!

after exchanging books, we camwhored, played with jaykie's ipad, talked about inception, weird dreams, night-shift work and other random stuff that are not related to the books we read, hah! okay, maybe we did talk about books, a little, heh. then i suggested we play a game to involve our books. you know that ask the book thing? each player will randomly grab a book and then anyone can ask a question and instruct the others to turn to page x and read line number x to answer the question. one question that came out that night was "what is your destiny?" and from the book i was holding, i forgot which one, i got "marriage and motherhood." pwedeee!

oh, and then there was this super friendly kid that might have been lured to our circle because we looked like we were having so much fun (and we did! mostly because of the answers eliza was getting from her book during the game, ha-ha-ha!).
photo by drea, thanks! :)

and so i now hereby declare my first bookswap experience a success!
wooohooo!

walking, bonchon, shopping, tv series marathon

kim and i might have just developed a new addiction over the weekend. on friday and saturday, we found ourselves taking afternoon walks from v.a. rufino street corner chino roces avenue to the bonchon store in greenbelt 1.
satisfied friday and saturday customers <3

for two consecutive nights we had bonchon's chicken chops sandwich with fries and coke meal for dinner.
nomnomnom :9

after our bonchon dinner on friday, kim accompanied me to the globe telecom branch in greenbelt 4. i was finally able to have my postpaid plan changed. for more than two years now, i've been on the very outdated plan 1599 which only include 40 hours of free internet surfing and 350 texts. so i figured it really is a time for a cool change, heh. i availed of the unlimited surfing (p999) and texting (p399) package. i also had my sim upgraded.

earlier, on our way from bonchon to globe, we naturally passed by greenbelt 5 and i just had to stop by zara. i just wanted to take a look, i told kim. but i walked out with this pretty bag i got for p995.
love at first sight <3

and then, from globe, i thought of going to the gift section of landmark. just to take a look, i told kim. but then i ended up buying some cuteness again, heh.
close/open
stick-on notes galore
pink lace tape with hearts and bows detail

kim and i also got matching planners for next year. future kung future, ha-ha-ha!
cute <3 (only p29.75 each!!!)

i got myself another planner for any year in the future, ha-ha-ha. it's just too cute not to take home. and it's pink!
that's little me! :)

i took photos of some of the inside pages:
click to admire :)

after that, we headed back (walked again from landmark to chino roces) and pigged out on potato chips and coke while watching the latest episodes of the big bang theory and how i met your mother.

here is an outfit shot kim took on our way to chino roces:

i love how my diy ladybug on a flower ring matched my red shorts and polkadot white shirt, heh.

earlier on saturday, kim and i went grocery shopping (primarily because i ran out of mayonnaise for my honey mustard potato chips dip, heh). after that, i made some dip and then we watched the latest episodes of chuck and the vampire diaries.
